The most secret place in England

With the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I this year, did you know that the nearby Elveden Estate was used during the war in 1916 as a top secret testing and training area for a new invention – now well known of course as the battle tank.

Hundreds of men turned 200 acres of farmland at Eleveden into top secret replica trenches as part of the project.

At the time, it was known as the most secret place in England. Local people, including staff on the estate, were warned they would be shot if they strayed into the restricted area!
